BALTO
STAR, a 3-year-old son of Glitterman,
continued his march towards Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May
by crushing the field in the $500,000 Arkansas Derby [G2]. Faced
with the difficult task of breaking from the eleventh post on a sloppy
racetrack that he had never run over before, the powerful, almost black
gelding charged to the lead even before reaching the first turn, cruised
through rapid fractions of :22, :45 4/5 and 1:10 2/5 before drawing off
to a 4 1/2 length victory in a final time of 1:49 flat for the 1 1/8 miles
with his ears pricked at the wire. From just 8 lifetime starts, BALTO
STAR has 4 wins (2 in graded stakes) and career earnings of $720,190.
For those doubters that believe that Glitterman
only sires sprinters you might better think again. According to his trainer

field of 3-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls in the $600,000 Spiral S. [G2]
at Turfway Park. This brilliant colt just floated along on the lead through
very fast fractions before widening in the stretch to win by an incredible
margin of 12 3/4 lengths while never really challenged. He completed the
1 1/8 miles distance in 1:47 1/5, just 3/5 of a second off of the track
record held by duel classic winner HANSEL. Trainer Todd Pletcher
indicated on the ESPN live telecast that BALTO STAR would probably
make his next start in the Wood Memorial S. [G1] at Aqueduct against
