A precocious two-year old, FORT CHAFFEE won his only start at two going six furlongs at Santa Anita in a quick 1:09.4, and placed second in the $75,000 Bolsa Chica Stakes in his second start - both times defeating graded stakes winner D'HALLEVANT. He also won the $50,000 Governor's Handicap by 2 1/4 lengths going one-mile in 1:36.4 over a dull track and placed by less than a length in the 6 1/2 furlong Don Bernhardt Stakes in track record time of 1:15 flat, defeating track record holder and sire ANJIZ. Displaying speed, class, and versatility, FORT CHAFFEE won seven races at seven different tracks and consistently ran Beyer Speed Figures of 90 or more, including a 7-furlong Keeneland allowance win in a quick 1:22.4, a 6 1/2 furlong Del Mar allowance in a blistering 1:15.3, and an impressive 5-length score at Oaklawn in the slop. He also placed in the 6 furlong Phoenix Handicap and Breeder's Cup Marfa Stakes over muddy tracks.
